Japan has four distinct seasons, and each one is dramatically different. Packing for July Tokyo (35°C, extreme humidity) and January Hokkaido (-10°C, heavy snow) requires completely different suitcases. This guide tells you exactly what to expect and what to bring.

Universal Packing List
Always Bring
- Comfortable walking shoes — You will walk 15,000-25,000 steps daily
- Compact umbrella — Rain is possible any month
- Small towel — Japanese restrooms often lack hand dryers or paper towels
- Portable battery — For your phone (your most important travel tool)
- Light day bag — For daily exploring. Coin lockers handle heavy luggage
Skip These
- Heavy guidebooks — Use your phone. Google Maps works perfectly in Japan
- Bulky toiletries — Buy travel-size everything at convenience stores or drugstores
- Too many clothes — Laundromats (coin laundry) are everywhere. Wash every 3-4 days
- Large luggage — Japanese hotel rooms, trains, and streets are small. One carry-on sized bag is ideal
Japan-Specific Tips
- Slip-on shoes — You remove shoes constantly (temples, ryokan, some restaurants). Laces are inconvenient
- Socks without holes — You will be taking shoes off in front of people regularly
- Cash — Bring some yen. Japan is still partially cash-based, especially outside Tokyo
- Zip-lock bags — For organizing small items, wet umbrellas, and leftover snacks
